The Jigsaw: State Borders in America
The Jigsaw is a project to document all 105 borders between the American states, and a quest to elevate the presence of these divisions in the national consciousness. State borders are the cracks in the American jigsaw puzzle, born of surveying errors and political compromise, preserved by powers of law, and observed by travelers whose civil rights can change with a step to either side of a mostly invisible line.
With this project, I hope to visualize both the abstract by traveling to carefully-selected locations and photographing man-made reflections of the state borders stitched into the American landscape. These photographs convey the unexpected poetry of friction and fit between the jigsaw pieces of these divided states.
